Britain begins its Olympic week bathed in welcome sunshine sun and reflected glory. Bradley Wiggins has made history by becoming the first Brit to win the Tour de France. The unprecedented victory propels the 32-year-old into the league of Britain's greatest sportsmen, with calls for him to be knighted.
-
The Tour de France champ is already the bearer of six Olympic medals, three of them gold - and he's hoping for more. He'll be gunning for glory in the men's road race and the individual time trial. Or, as the Times puts it: "That was the yellow, now for the gold." -
Big congrats to @bradwiggins on making history w/ his #TdF victory. Proud day for #OurGreatestTeam RT if your now more excited for #Olympicsby TeamGB via twitter 7/23/2012 6:37:10 AM -

It's day 66 of the Olympic Torch Relay and things are starting to turn slightly surreal. The symbolic flame will star in EastEnders, but not before being carried aloft by Sir Patrick Stewart, the one-time captain of the Starship Enterprise. More on all that to follow!

Flagbearing rights are frightfully democratic, and Sir Chris, a gold medal winner at the two previous Games, won the biggest number of votes among the 542 members of the Team GB. It will be the second successive time the Scot will have been given the honour - he also carried the Union Jack in the closing ceremony in Beijing.
-
We're receiving reports that Alison Williamson gave Sir Chris a good fight in the vote to select Team GB's flagbearer. The archer will be competing at her sixth Olympics. Yes, sixth! A number of other possible candidates such as sailor Ben Ainslie and swimmer Rebecca Adlington were not on the shortlist because they are not able to attend the opening ceremony due to competition demands. -
I was waiting for the bus to go from the #Olympics Village to #Wimbledon for 1hour 10 min! It was late because of the traffic((by g_voskoboeva via twitter 7/23/2012 8:39:18 AM -
And they will open the special lane only from Wednesday! Why from Wednesday? This is a decision of the mayor of London. Well...by g_voskoboeva via twitter 7/23/2012 8:39:50 AM -

Now we know the identity of the Team GB flagbearer, what of the person who will light the Olympic Flame on Friday night? Here's London 2012 chairman Seb Coe's latest take on the matter: "It will be a judgment made by our creative teams led by Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry, and of course I will be a part of that but I have been very, very clear that it is not my call." -

The identity of the final fire-bearer is to be kept a secret until Friday's moment of truth. Past luminaries include Paavo Nurmi, Muhammad Ali and Cathy Freeman. But it has been reported that the creative teams have even discussed whether the person needs to be well-known or should be symbolic - for example a child from the East End of London.

HOY FACTS: At 36, this will almost certainly be Sir Chris Hoy's final Olympic Games and he hopes to retire on home soil after the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Should he achieve this aspiration it will be the first time he has cycled internationally in Scotland and he will compete in the arena named in his honour, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. -

EQUESTRIAN: Australia's preparations for the London 2012 eventing competition have been dealt a blow after one of their team members was forced to withdraw. Shane Rose, a silver medalist at Beijing four years ago, is out due to a leg injury suffered by his horse. -
